'Tis the season to watch as your bank account is depleted; to struggle among the masses to acquire the most highly sought after item of the year; to find the greatest deal for the most expensive of presents. What we tend to forget is the sharing aspect of it all, the joyful part of holiday shopping that is lost among media who solely highlight the problematic parking situations. The giving, the exciting atmosphere, the month of family celebrations, that's what December should be all about and what better way to give this holiday season than the gift of youth entrepreneurship, a pledge in the name of startups.
Tonight from 6 p.m. - 8 p.m. BUILD DC, a youth organization with a mission geared towards using innovation and entrepreneurship as a way to guide low-income high school students towards a successful college career, will be hosting their 5th Annual Holiday Sales Bazaar. Held at The Hill Center, those in attendance will be able to meet some of the brightest young entrepreneurs in the District who have already been invested in by the most prestigious Venture Capitalists around. Students present will be representing three flagship schools including Maya Angelou PCS, Roosevelt SHS, and Eastern SHS.
According to Director of BUILD DC Christopher Brown, there will be 16 student teams in total present who will deliver their business pitches as well as sell their products. Those involved include: Fantastic Photography; It's a Hoodie Thing; TAG Team who create D.C.-focused apparel (like limited RG III hoodies); Five Stars who sell delicious homemade goods; and Body Oilers who sell some aromatically enticing fragrances.
As the pitches are given, guests will be asked to vote on the teams with the most enthusiastic sales pitch, most creative booth designs, most convincing sales person, most professional team, and favorite products.
There will also be raffles with prizes like wine tastings at Paradise Springs, Ted's Bulletin, and others.
So skip out on the absurdly long cashier lines and head to BUILD DC's holiday sales bazaar for a unique gift for that special someone and feel better about spending your hard earned cash knowing its going to a worthy, youth-driven cause.
Happy startup shopping!
