Student Startups, Classics on the Mall, and Martinis Galore: ITC’s Top Edu Event Picks of the Week



We know how difficult it can be to organize a calendar that compiles all of the events you want to go to every month. It seems daunting at best. There are hundreds of events that escape your purview every week and you think, “damn, I wish I knew about that one.” To make your lives easier, every Monday we troll the web in search of the top education-related events of the week. They range anywhere from tipsy networking happy hours to conferences that could change your future. Enjoy the selections and please let me know if you have any others to add!

Monday

Screen on the Green - 8:30 PM - National Mall

A free way to spend your Monday night relaxing on the National Mall, Screen on the Green produces showings of classic films up until August 6. Tonight, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid will be playing on the gigantic screen as moviegoers cuddle on their blankets from home and view the film starring Paul Newman. The movie spectacular is about two Western robbers who escape to Bolivia, an interesting choice from 1969. Make sure to get to the Mall nice and early (preferably around 5:00 PM) to get the perfect spot! 

Tuesday

College Night at Lima Lounge DC - 9:00 PM to 1:00 AM - Lima Restaurant and Lounge

Every Tuesday, the Student Intern Network (SIN) sponsors a wild night of drink specials, DJ music mashups, and a packed dance scene. Bud Lights for only $3 until midnight, Ketel One Vodka for only $150 a bottle, and an outdoor patio to cool you off after the excessive amount of indoor dancing you do is an extremely enticing package. Bring your friends out for a crazy night you are sure to forget.

Mets at Nationals - 7:05 PM - Nationals Park

With the Nats having a great season thus far, why not cheer them on this Tuesday when they take on the Mets? Tickets are still as cheap as ever, with $10 tickets still available, and the beer never stops flowing. Head out to the Nationals Park to scream for your favorite players, purchase some Nats apparel, and brave the heat with an ice cold alcoholic beverage of your choice. Make sure to look out for me if you go!

Wednesday 

Startup Hoyas Incubator - July Open House - 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM - Fisher Colloquium, Rafik B. Hariri Building, Georgetown University

The Startup Hoyas Incubator is hosting their second open house and networking event of the season on Wednesday to show off their Georgetown students and alumni who are continuing to tirelessly work on on their innovative businesses. As a way to admire and acknowledge the growth of these student-run startups, Georgetown Entrepreneurship Initiative is serving refreshments as the blooming entrepreneurs pitch their business ideas and put their information on display for all to see. Networking with faculty, D.C. Tech big wigs, and participants in the TechStars Patriot Bootcamp will occur after exhibiting your support for the hoyapreneurs. I will be present, so make sure to seek me out!

Venture Camp: Entrepreneurship Summer Series - 6:00 PM to 7:30 PM - GMU Founders Hall

Featuring our very own Carl Pierre as a panelist, this is a must attend event. Created with the young professional in mind, Venture Camp is a three part series for college and graduate students and interns to explore entrepreneurship and startups. The first session take place this Wednesday and will focus on crowdfunding, but there will also be speeches by young innovative thinkers like Jonathan Aberman from Aplifier Ventures, Alice Ning from TapCaps, Rank Petricoin from Bindle Bags, and finally Carl Pierre, from our very own InTheCapital. The second and third sessions will take place on July 25 and August 1. Come celebrate their entrepreneurship summer series with some of the greatest minds in the business!

College To Corporate Book Release Party in DC - 6:30 PM to 10:30 PM - THE DUNES Art Gallery

 An interesting take on life after college, best-selling author Nathanial Portis will be celebrating his third book of non-fiction. Though there are limited tickets, this is a chance to meet a man who understands the perils of being a Millennial. There will also be a plentiful supply of drinks, complimentary signed book upon arrival, and a spectacular cover band.

Thursday

Baltimore Career Fair - 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM - Four Points by Sheraton BWI Airport

It's all about networking, strategies, and enhancing your career. The career building workshops will teach you how to be that future CEO you have always wanted to be, while giving you the tools to increase your chances of acquiring that just out of reach job you have always hoped for. Learn from the pros as they reveal to you their best kept secrets about succeeding in business.

Friday

TechStars Patriot Boot Camp Demo Day - 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM - Rafik B. Hariri Building, Georgetown University

The finale of the three-day labor intensive boot camp over at Georgetown University, TechStars will be showcasing their well developed ventures. Pitching their ideas and laying out their future plans and goals for all to see, the TechStars will be hosting a day consisting of professional keynote speakers and innovative demonstrations. 

Alumni Networking Night - Washington DC Reception - 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM - Fisher Colloquium, Rafik B. Hariri Building, Georgetown University

Georgetown McDonough's School of Businesss Executive Education invites alumni to a night of classy cocktails, delectable hors d'oeuvres, and, of course, networking. Come connect with your long lost friends or meet new people that could help you further your business. Learn from others and build-up your list of contacts in the process. Not interested in swapping business cards? No need to worry. There will be plenty in attendance just looking to chit chat over a martini or two.
