At Age 10, This Student was Designing for Foreign Diplomats



He loved shiny things like any other young child, but rather than just staring, he touched them. He admired jewels, shifted them between his fingers, and watched as light reflected off of every crevice. It was then that he understood that his future was in beauty. He was 10-years old.

George Mickum has always been destined to be a part of fashion world. From designing jewelry out of pearls and rubies in his free time to selling the fine pieces to foreign dignitaries from ages 10 to 14, it was clear that he had an eye for luxury items. Though his jewelry making days are behind him, he has found a new passion to follow as a fashion consultant.

At age 14, Mickum founded Georgeous, his very own personal stylist business. As an aspiring entrepreneur fascinated with the idea of precision, Mickum knew that his business would take off. It's the "beauty and intricacy of every aspect of fashion, from gloves to suits to evening gowns to beaded purses," he said to WTOP. It comes down to the size of the heel, the position of the scarf, anything can alter the look of an outfit and it has to be just right.

As a freshman at the University of Delaware, Mickum has seen Georgeous expand from serving East Coast clients to D.C. ambassadors and celebrities. "I had a knack for it. I just started with friends, and friends of friends and my mother's friends," he revealed to WTOP. The procession of going from a close knit community to a widespread population is the key to any budding startup, something that Mickum clearly knew.

Though his age may seem like an obstacle in itself, he admits that it has never truly been a problem. "It's always been told to me that I look very mature for my age and that I never really acted my age. That was a big help. I never really mentioned my age to anyone." This is advice that more young entrepreneurs should listen to. If you act like you know what you are doing, what you are saying, then you will attain the respect you deserve.

Mickum has not only owned his consulting business for the past five years (since eighth grade), but has also worked with Ralph Lauren, Glamour Magazine, and other big names in the fashion industry.

Personal stylists do not come cheaply, so for those that cannot afford Mickum's expertise, he has shared a list of ideas with WTOP for those on a budget. Even though you may be strapped for money, it doesn't mean you can't look luxurious and enticing to the eye. Money doesn't make the outfit, you do. Be Georgeous.

  1. Tailor everything. It makes you look more professional.
  2. Accessories can make a boring business outfit standout with a little flare.
  3. Lighter fabrics for the hot D.C. weather allow you to feel less stuffy, yet retain your executive look.
  4. Color and patterns change a whole outfit, so mix it up.
