A meal delivery startup born in the D.C. area is traveling south to conquer a piece of Richmond's food scene.

Alexandria, Va.-based Territory has expanded into Richmond to deliver chef-crafted meals to busy and hungry locals. It's the first new market for the company following its four initial hubs – the DMV region, Dallas, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Territory’s platform leverages a network of local chefs to create customizable menus without gluten, dairy or refined sugars that cater to several dietary preferences. The food is responsibly sourced and crafted by independent, local chefs, according to the company, so it has to choose new markets carefully.

Territory meals are made fresh each week and start around $10 per meal, with free delivery to pickup spots or a small fee for home delivery, where available. The platform's main focus is its menu filters, with categories including low-carb, Paleo, Mediterranean, New & Expecting Moms and others for users to personalize their dietary approach. The menu has at least 25 meal options every week and offers various portion sizes.

Territory rebranded from Power Supply in 2017, and has since expanded its meal delivery to 500 locations – not including Richmond's upcoming count.

The startup has raised about $20 million in funding since launching, including investments from New Richmond Ventures, The Motley Fool and Blackboard co-founder Michael Chasen.

To guide its expansion, Territory recently brought in former Amazon executive Abigail Coleman as its new CEO. She was previously head of e-commerce and VP of marketing and strategy at Amazon subsidiary Quidsi, and before that served as global marketing leader for gum at Mondelez International and senior brand manager at Kraft Foods Group. Coleman replaced CEO Patrick Smith, who co-founded the company seven years ago.

Territory's addition to the community goes beyond chef-crafted meal delivery. Through a partnership with Feeding America, for every order on the platform, more than a pound of food is recovered and shared with someone struggling to put food on the table.
