A 2015 analysis on how on-demand startups and technology will impact B2B applications pegged the Corporate Catering market at $25 billion.

And while opportunity (like the above market size would indicate) tends to result in countless innovations (some good, many bad), when’s the last time you were wowed or surprised by a new catering option? Again, nothing against the sandwich platter or the extra large aluminum foil serving tray, but this is a space that feels ripe for disruption.

HUNGRY wants to change all that.

The D.C. startup is an online marketplace that connects offices to independent chefs, allowing the latter group to seamlessly enter the corporate catering market. The company announced today that it has raised $1.5 million in funding, bringing its total to $4.5 million.

The company said that it will be using the capital to scale its operations and staff and expand into New York City and Philadelphia.

According to an interview with Vator, the startup has over 300 companies using its service, generated $1 million in revenue in 2017 and is pacing to quadruple that figure in 2018. The company also said that independent chefs are making an average of $75 - $150 an hour, compared to the industry average of $22 an hour.

The company will also use the new capital to continue to build out its delivery capabilities. Currently the startup relies on its 'Catering Captains,' an in-house team, that delivers food to offices daily.

Also, HUNGRY isn't the only company looking to transform the office lunch. In fact, Fooda, a Chicago-startup that has raised over $34M, has been connecting offices to independent restaurants for nearly seven years.

The fast-growing company is available in 16 markets, serving Atlanta, Austin, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Detroit, Houston, Los Angeles, Milwaukee, Nashville, New York City, Philadelphia, Phoenix, San Jose, and Washington D.C.
