NYC-based coding school Flatiron School has plans to open a D.C. location in early 2018, a spokesperson tells DC Inno.
The news comes two weeks after co-working giant WeWork acquired the coding school for an undisclosed price. Flatiron had raised more than $14 million since its founding in 2012. In the acquisition announcement, WeWork said members would now be able to access Flatiron's courses both in-person and virtually.
Now, WeWork is taking the opportunity to capitalize on one of its largest markets: Washington, D.C. With two locations opening this summer, the co-working company now has 10 locations in the D.C. metro area, including new spots on H Street NE and in Navy Yard.
This would be the second campus for NYC's Flatiron School. Since its founding five years ago, Flatiron has had 1,000 students graduate between its in-person Full Stack Web Development course and its online offerings, a spokesperson said. Flatiron offers a full-time web development course; a handful of certificate programs in HTML & CSS, Ruby and Javascript; and a handful of free online courses.

Flatiron and WeWork are entering the coding school market at an interesting time, both locally and nationwide. In October, The Iron Yard closed its doors after the entire company announced its shutdown in July. Launch Academy started its women-only coding bootcamp program in October in Dupont Circle, with plans to start in-person instruction in December. Dev Bootcamp — which has locations in Chicago, Seattle, San Diego, Austin, Texas and New York — is closing up after its last cohort in December.
