Every month we recap the biggest tech hires and departures in the D.C. area over the past month. To get hiring and other local innovation news daily, sign up for The Beat newsletter. Here’s our list of the top hires in D.C. tech for June:

General Assembly

  • Shahier Rahman, former 1776 D.C. campus manager, started at General Assembly D.C. as the group's partnerships specialist. His first day at GA was June 1, and you can glance at his goodbye note to 1776 on Twitter now where he also talks about starting his own startup.

2U

  • 2U has a new executive amongst its ranks. According to an email press release on June 1, the publicly-traded edtech company has hired David Sutphen as its Chief Communications and Engagement Officer. In the role, Sutphen will oversee global communications, public affairs and corporate brand, and events. Sutphen joins 2U from the Brunswick Group where he was a partner and head of the D.C. office.

Deloitte

  • Nishita Henry is transitioning into a new role at Deloitte, as announced in a press release on June 5. Previously federal innovation leader at Deloitte Consulting, Henry is now the company's new federal technology leader. In the new position, she will lead more than 3,000 employees working with federal agencies to modernize their tech systems. Her work with the company has included leading Deloitte's work at the Bureau of Engraving and Printing and work with the Food and Drug Administration.

Crowdskout

  • D.C. tech titan Shana Glenzer is on the move. This time to Crowdskout to be the data management startup's new Chief Marketing Officer. She started at the company on June 5, and Glenzer told me that she's most excited to dive back into a tech startup atmosphere again. Glenzer joins Crowdskout from MakeOffices where she was the co-working space's CMO.

Twitter

  • Twitter now has a new global head of policy communications in its D.C. office. Emily Horne joined the social media company as its head of policy communications from the National Security Council. While at the council, she was its assistant press secretary. Horne has a tough job ahead of her as she now oversees Twitter's polices, including abuse, hate speech and user privacy issues. Horne started on June 19.

UrbanStems

  • After a pretty rocky Valentine's Day, D.C. startup UrbanStems is emerging with a fresh game plan with the hiring of a chief operations officer, the company announced on June 27. The new COO hails from the top ranks of emerging meal kit app HelloFresh — and by top ranks, I mean the very top: UrbanStems hired HelloFresh USA CEO Seth Goldman. While overseeing HelloFresh's U.S. operations, which you can think of a competitor to Blue Apron, Goldman secured $37M in incentives from New Jersey, so the startup could expand its facilities into new regions. Currently, UrbanStems operates in Washington, D.C., New York City, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Austin, Texas, and they have eyes on Dallas and Houston, as well. With Goldman on board, the startup is hoping to enter a new stage of growth.
