New Fiber Internet Service Coming to D.C.

Denver startup Layer3 TV found success when it decided to target cable customers over cord cutters when it launched—instead offering a Comcast alternative, over a Netflix competitor.

The startup came to D.C. in summer 2016, and today, Bloomberg reports that the startup plans to partner with Verizon to offer a bundled fiber internet and cable package to customers in the D.C. metro area. (We reached out to Layer3 TV and a spokesperson said they could not comment on potential partnerships.)

On its own, Layer3 TV is a 4K-ready box that comes with bluetooth and Internet of Things capabilities, two USB ports, over 250 channels—with more than 200 in HD—and over 15,000 On Demand options. The box also lets you check into your Facebook and Twitter feeds right from your television. And Layer3 TV offers these capabilities at prices starting at $80 and up to $150 per month.

Now, with a new reported-partnership with Verizon, Layer3 TV can offer fiber internet service to customers starting in the D.C. metro area.

It's an interesting match-up seeing as Verizon technically competes with Layer3 TV for cable subscribers in the area; however, the partnership opens up new avenues for both the burgeoning Layer3 TV and the established Verizon. The partnership and offering also makes Layer3 TV all the more competitive to one of the D.C. area's go-to cable providers: Comcast. Before, Layer3 TV only offered a competing television package, leaving Comcast somewhat more appealing to those who prefer to keep their cable and internet in one bill.

In an official press release from April 1, Layer3 TV announced it would be offering "the most advanced fiber in home internet to accompany its industry-leading allHD Platinum cable television service." However, the release has no mention of Verizon.

“Our pureFiber Internet service with unlimited data demonstrates our commitment to deliver best-in-class technology, enabling consumers to surf, stream, and download to their hearts’ desire,” said Layer3 TV CEO Jeff Binder in the release.

According to Bloomberg, those in D.C. who want Layer3 TV's cable and internet bundle can buy it starting at $125 per month.
