Borderstan, a D.C. online news publication focusing on "mid-city neighborhoods" like Logan Circle, Dupont Circle, U Street, Columbia Heights and Adams Morgan will cease publication on December 23rd, according to a post on the site.
Originally founded in 2008, Borderstan was acquired by Local News Now LLC, the publisher of ARLnow.com, in 2015. The site relaunched once in June 2015, under co-editors Tim Regan and Andrew Ramonas. Regan will be moving over to ARLnow, according to the announcement, while Ramonas is leaving the company.
"This is sad news and I will be sorry to see Borderstan go," John Lisle, chief of external affairs at DC Water, told DC Inno. "The site and its editors have always been fair to us, and they have helped keep their readers informed with hyperlocal stories about the communities they cover.
"I would take Tim Regan’s call any day, but don’t tell him I said that,” Lisle joked.
Borderstan's coverage ranged from restaurant openings and closings, events and crime, to whimsical yet dedicated coverage of offbeat city happenings like the disappearance of a fire truck play structure at a D.C. playground.
In announcing the shut down, Borderstan addressed the challenges of the local news model and admitted it had not gained enough traction with local advertisers to stay operational.
We've reached out to Borderstan for further comment and will update this post.
