Where To Shop In D.C. on Small Business Saturday

This Saturday, November 26, is Small Business Saturday. Sandwiched in-between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday encourages people to patronize local small businesses. When it comes to Washington, D.C., small business shoppers have plenty of options. According to the Small Business Administration (SBA), 92% of all employers in the District are small businesses.

We put together a list of some of D.C.’s great small businesses to consider visiting this Saturday.

Made In DC Holiday Marketplace
  • The 4th annual Made in DC Holiday Marketplace, presented by DC Brau & Think Local First DC, will give visitors a chance to holiday shop at stalls featuring locally-made products, including: Crunkcakes, Grip Unlimited Bags, Harper Macaw, Jerkface Artisanal Beef Jerky, Junius Cold Brew Coffee Company, Kelly Towles, Stitch & Rivet and Red Apron Butcher. (3178 Bladensburg Rd NE B)
Steadfast Supply
  • Steadfast Supply is housed in a 4,000 square feet retail space in The Yards. Different local and national brands are able to feature their wares in the space, so you can shop small at a bunch of different places all at once. (1331 4th St. SE)
Miss Pixie's
  • A D.C. institution since 1997, Miss Pixies offers an eclectic mix of antique furniture and home goods all purchased from different auctions. The colorful 14th St. storefront has an ever changing assortment of furniture, with new shipments delivered every Wednesday. Oh, and there are fresh baked chocolate chip cookies available every day so you can snack while you shop. (1626 14th St NW)
Crooked Beat/Songbyrd Record Cafe
  • Adams Morgan lost one of its classic record shops earlier this year when the Crooked Beat moved out to Alexandria. Now, the shop will be popping up in the Songbyrd Record Cafe especially for Small Business Saturday. Vinyl is back, and if you're looking to fill out your collection, this is the place to stop.
The Bike Rack
  • Looking for some new wheels to get you around when the Metro fails you? Or maybe you've been putting off fixing that flat since it's gotten a little colder outside. You can swing by The Bike Rack's two locations in Logan Circle or Brookland for all your bike-related needs. (1412 Q St NW and 716 Monroe St NE)
Salt & Sundry
  • Started in a space in Union Market by owner Amanda McClements, Salt and Sundry opened a second location off of 14th St., which it plans to expand in the coming year. The shop carries a wide array of tasteful home knickknacks, candles, kitchen and barware, as well as furniture. McClements' father, a carpenter in North Carolina, builds tables for the store out of reclaimed wood. (1401 S St NW & in Union Market)
Urban Dwell
  • Founded by Air Force veteran Tom McMahon, Urban Dwell opened up shop in Adams Morgan in 2015. The independent store carries trendy gifts, greeting cards and home decor, much of it D.C.-themed. (1837 Columbia Rd NW)
Kramerbooks
  • If you're looking for another classic, independent bookstore that has also been visited by the Obamas closer to downtown, Kramerbooks & Afterwords Cafe in Dupont Circle offers books, bites and a bar, and has been a destination for hungry and thirsty bookworms since 1976. Self-described as "local, independent, and unique," Kramerbooks is a great spot if you're looking for holiday gifts and a good cocktail to go with it. (1517 Connecticut Ave NW)
Labyrinth Games & Puzzles
  • Looking for a D.C. version of Monopoly, a chess set, or a totally new game? Head to Labyrinth Games & Puzzles on Capitol Hill, a "family-friendly, community-focused store featuring a wide selection of non-electronic, specialty games, puzzles, and mazes." With hundreds of game and puzzle options, you'll find something for everyone. [Author's Note: pick up an edition of Spot It. You won't be sorry]
Baked and Wired
  • This Georgetown staple, family owned coffee shop and bakery is famous both in D.C. and nationally for their fine baked creations and delicious coffee. Stop in for an espresso or cup of cold brew, and grab a cupcake (or dozen) or any of their phenomenal baked goods. (1052 Thomas Jefferson St NW)
Maketto
  • Maketto is a unique place. The H St. shop combines a mix of coffee, dining and eclectic urban retail. Sneakerheads can browse their selection of shoes, while coffee aficionados can head upstairs for a caffeine fix. Oh, right, and there's the Southeast Asian inspired dining from chef Erik Bruner-Yang to top it all off.
Union Kitchen Grocery
  • Union Kitchen Grocery is the one-stop-shop to find more than 200 food & beverage products made in D.C. at Union Kitchen: NoMa and Union Kitchen: Ivy City. You'll get everything from artisan ketchup, to chocolate, to coffee and more. They also have a coffee bar and lunch counter. (538 3rd St NE)
DCanter
  • After a long day of shopping, it's time to get your buzz on. In Barracks Row, head to DCanter, an acclaimed wine shop from the husband and wife team of Michael Warner and Michelle Lim Warner. Having both traveled extensively and developed a love of wine abroad, the Warners opened DCanter as a boutique wine store to share their passion for wine with D.C. The store works to find independent producers and high quality wines, and holds events and tastings at their 8th St SE location. (545 8th Street SE)
Sherry's Wine & Spirits
  • Of D.C.'s many liquor stores, Sherry's has one of the best selections around. Whether you're looking for rare spirits, a local craft beer or the right bottle of wine to bring to a party, Sherry's probably has it and can help you find it in their large Woodley Park store. And if they don't have it in the store, they'll order it for you. They also get fresh baguettes delivered to the store every evening...so there's that.

[Author Note: We in no way consider this a full and complete list, just some of our local favorites. D.C. has hundreds of thriving small businesses and they all deserve your support on Nov. 28th. Where will you be shopping? Let us know in the comments]
