The 12 Biggest DC Tech Hires in September



Every month we recap the biggest tech hires and departures in the D.C. area over the past month. To get hiring and other local innovation news daily, sign up for The Beat. Here’s our list of the top hires in D.C. innovation for September:

Consumer Technology Association

The Consumer Technology Association hired Jennifer Taylor as its Vice President of U.S. Jobs, according to a press release on Sept. 6. Taylor comes to CTA from her position at Caring Village, where she was the executive vice president of sales and marketing. Before that, Taylor spent 10 years with AARP as the group's vice president of business development. At CTA, Taylor will continue to develop CTA's role with U.S. Tech Vets, in partnership with the Northern Virginia Technology Council.

Whiteboard Advisors

Alison Griffin joined the team at Whiteboard Advisors as a senior advisor, according to an email from the company on Sept. 6. Previously, Griffin served twice as a policy advisor to the chairman of the U.S. House Committee on Education and the Workforce, and she's worked with the American Association of State Colleges and Universities.

ZoomData

Reston, Va.-based ZoomData has a new CEO, according to reports on Sept. 7. Chief Operating Officer Nick Halsey is now the company's CEO, as founder and former chief executive Justin Langseth becomes the company's board chairman. The move comes amid workforce cuts and rumors of mismanagement, as WBJ points out.

Lyft

Lyft beefed up its federal policy team. According to reports on Sept. 7Lauren Belive is now the director of the company's federal government relations team; Jake Swanton was newly hired to be the senior federal public policy manager; and Tommy Leander is a federal policy associate.

Measure

Former U.S. Secretary of Commerce Penny Pritzker joined the board of directors at Measure, a Washington, D.C.-based drone solutions company, on Sept. 7. As the company states in a release, "Her presence on the board reflects the growing importance of the drone services industry, which is equipping businesses with aerial data that can improve safety, productivity and the bottom line."

Squire Patton Boggs

According to a report in Politico's Cybersecurity newsletter, Tony Scott, the federal chief information officer under President Obama, joined law firm Squire Patton Boggs as their senior data privacy and cybersecurity adviser on Sept. 11.

Verodin

Northern Virginia cybersecurity startup Verodin added a new board member to its ranks on Sept. 12. Former RSA executive chairman Art Coviello is joining the board, according to a press release.

Deloitte

Margaret Anderson joined Deloitte's Arlington offices as a managing director for its federal health practice, according to a press release on Sept. 18. In her new role, Anderson will work across federal health, nonprofit and the healthcare and life science sectors. Anderson joins Deloitte from FasterCures, where she was executive director of the Washington-based center of the Milken Institute.

Research Innovations

Research Innovations, Inc. added a new executive to its ranks on Sept. 19. According to an email press release, the Alexandria, Va.-based company hired Ellen Minderman as its Vice President of C4I, or Command, Control, Communications, Computers and Intelligence. In her new role, Minderman will oversee growth in the aforementioned sections. Minderman brings a wealth of experience with the Department of Defense and intelligence community, a must for RII. Most recently, she led the more than $100 million portfolio of Raytheon's intelligence, information and services business.

Urgent.ly

According to his LinkedIn profile on Sept. 12Urgent.ly co-founder Rick Robinson is no longer at the company. Since August 2017, Robinson has been the vice president of product at POLITICO. Robinson has no operational role at Urgent.ly moving forward; however, he is still on as a stakeholder.

ServicePower

EverFi's CFO Matt Sysak has a new gig. According to a press release and Sysak's LinkedIn profile on Sept. 22, he is now the CFO at ServicePower. Based in McLean, Va., ServicePower provides field service management solutions to clients such as GE Appliance, Mitsubishi and AIG Warranty.

Along with bringing on Sysak, ServicePower also hired Samir Gulati as Chief Marketing Officer. Most recently, Sysak was vice president of marketing at Appian, which went public this year.
