Here are all of the tech funding deals out of the Washington, D.C., area this week. We’ll be updating this post as more news comes out.

Friday, October 23

Tenable Network Security (Columbia, Md.)

  • Deal: $9.8M equity raise, according to an SEC filing
  • Investors: previous - Accel, In-Q-Tel
  • What they do: cybersecurity monitoring and defense
  • Other details: privately held co. founded in 2002 by veteran cybersec product gurus Ron Gula, Renaud Deraison and Jack Huffard

Wednesday, October 21

Northwest Biotherapeutics (Bethesda, Md.)

  • Deal: $30M equity investment, announced by co. 
  • Investors: Woodford Investment Management
  • What they do: personalized immune therapies for solid tumor cancers
  • Other details: "Woodford will purchase $30 million of the Company’s common stock at $5.50 per share, for a total of 5,454,545 shares, raising Woodford’s total holdings to 25,915,937 shares, or about 28.1% of the Company. The purchase will take place in a closing on or before October 22, 2015."

TeleCommunication Systems (Annapolis, Md.)

  • Deal: $5M incremental funding from the U.S. Army, announced by co.
  • Investors: U.S. Army
  • What they do: advanced communications systems - Secret Internet Protocol Routers (SIPR) and Non-classified Internet Protocol Routers (NIPR) Access Point and Small Aperture Terminals (VSATs).
  • Other details: makers of deployable wireless infrastructure

Sonavex (Baltimore, Md.)

  • Deal: raised a $320K venture round, according to an SEC filing
  • Investors: undisclosed
  • What they do: a Johns Hopkins University spin-off startup that simplifies point-of-care ultrasound imaging tech
  • Other details: the imaging tech can be used outside of pregnancy related visits. For example, it enables an ultrasound-based method of detecting anastomotic blood clots

Tuesday, October 20

Precision Biologics (Rockville, Md.)

  • Deal: $53M majority stake acquisition deal, announced by co.
  • Investors: NantWorks via serial entrepreneur and surgeon Patrick Soon-Shiong
  • What they do: antibodies and diagnostics products aimed at curing solid-tumor cancers
  • Other details: products made by the firm include a drug that targets advanced pancreatic and colorectal cancers

Monday, October 19

Cryptonite (Rockville, Md.)

  • Deal: raised $1.3M from a total $2.5M equity offering, according to an SEC filing
  • Investors: undisclosed
  • What they do: a cybersecurity that develops security infrastructure protection via detection and security automation products
  • Other details: founded in 2015 and led by CEO Mike Simon

MantaFuel (Baltimore, Md.)

  • Deal: raised a $150K seed round, announced by co. 
  • Investors: Chesapeake Bay Seed Capital Fund
  • What they do: biotechnology firm that has developed a three step method for producing renewable crude oil from algae
  • Other details: Received TVP Phase II award from TEDCO. Since being founded in 2014, the co. has also received over $500K in funding via the US Department of Energy, Maryland Industrial Partnership, the Maryland Department of Natural Resources, the Invest Maryland Challenge and the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technologies REEF program.
