SWaN and Legend Venture Partners is a Leesburg, Va.-based venture capital firm that you may have never heard of, but who you should probably start paying attention to. Per Fortune’s Dan Primack, SWaN & Legend Venture Partners is planning to raise upwards of $150 million for its third fund.
Founded in 2012 and led by Fred Schaufeld, Clifford White and Anthony Nader, the firm had no website for several months before registering a domain name that originally carried a plain and outdated website template with limited information and accessibility. But, as major funders of D.C. startups, SWaN and Legend is still a name that needs to be remembered. Recently, the firm renovated their online landing page and it seems are also in the process of raising a new fund.
SWaN and Legend raised $17.6 million — mentioned via their website as a total $70.4 million fund — in July, 2013, according to an SEC filing. The firm is a major investor in Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the Ted Leonsis-run group that owns the Washington Wizards and Washington Capitals. They are also investors in McLean-based CustomInk, Jose Andres’ Think Food Group, fast-growing supply logistics startup Optoro, BigTeams, Anonymous Content, KIND, La Lumiere, SocialRadar, Tango Card and Quad Learning.
Most recently, on April 2, Rockville-based Cava Mezze Grill closed a $16 million Series C led by SWaN and Legend.
