2015 is on and the fundraising swing is in full effect as DMV startups netted $82.7 million over the last 30 days. Of particular note: Regenxbio, a biotechnology company that uses gene therapy to treat diseases of the central nervous system, raised $30 million from investors to usher its drugs through clinical trials. It is the third round of financing for the company, which previously raised $15 million from investors.
Regenxbio was formed by FoxKiser, a District-based life science consulting business, specifically to license the technology. Venrock and Brookside Capital led the latest investment with participation from Deerfield Management and an unnamed new investor.
Among the biggest funding deals this week in the DC area was the $12.5 million Series A round for McLean, Va.-based identity authentication startup Araxid. In an interview, CEO Mark LaRow told DC Inno that the company is looking to nearly double its workforce in 2015. The plan is to expand from 20 employees to approximately 35 — primarily in the form of technical staff such as engineers.
