Innovation continues to thrive in the startup ecosystem, despite economic uncertainties and a venture capital market in flux. Startups operating across various sectors are working to redefine entire industries and change the way we do business, our jobs and how we live our lives.

In this annual feature, DC Inno introduces you to 10 startups throughout Greater Washington that are setting the pace and challenging the status quo.

Take Impact Observatory, a D.C.-based technology company that uses artificial intelligence and data gathered from space to help governments and businesses understand changes in population, infrastructure or the impact weather events have on natural resources so that they can quickly respond to those changes.

There are also startups in the consumer space, such as Sweetkiwi, whose signature “whipped Greek yogurt” contains more fiber, more protein and less sugar and calories than the typical ice cream brand; Bored Rebel, a Northern Virginia apparel company that’s breathing new life into the drab T-shirt; and Foraged, whose tech platform helps independent food producers connect directly with consumers.

And there are health care startups such as Accompany Health and Ounce Care that, in their own ways, are working to improve health care outcomes for low-income households.

All of the startups featured in this package have been carefully chosen after a thorough editorial review by the teams at the Washington Business Journal and DC Inno.

To be considered for this feature, these startups had to show remarkable promise for the upcoming year. This could be through anticipated growth in their workforce, significant product launches, securing outside investment or any other factor that signals a bright future ahead. Additionally, these startups must have been founded within the last 10 years and should not have secured a funding round higher than a Series A.

Each startup is already generating revenue and heading toward profitability. Collectively, they have raised over $98 million in outside investment and employ about 200 people.

We hope you enjoy getting to know them as much as we did.
