Husband-wife business partners Vinay Bhargava and Anjali Kataria couldn’t have predicted a pandemic would accelerate their Bethesda startup’s growth. But they were ready when it did.

Mytonomy Inc. raised $25 million in July 2021, helping stretch its software to more customers as demand skyrocketed through the pandemic and the health sector suffered a staffing shortage. Now the co-founders are rolling out their patient engagement platform, Mytonomy’s Cloud for Healthcare, to support patients undergoing more than 100 health conditions, from maternal care to joint replacement. They’re also deploying depression screens and surveys for cardiac patients and others, while nudging patients via email and handouts to stick with their care.

Mytonomy’s platform contains videos, audio and written content, from education to appointment information to surveys. It aims to replace the printouts or pamphlets commonly given to patients, instead arming them with interactive modules specific to their procedures or diagnoses.

The company is also launching an app on the Roku platform, the first of potentially more TV modules, Kataria told us. And as the home becomes the epicenter of care for patients, she said, “bringing health care into the living room and the palm of a patient’s hand will continue to be a major focus in 2022.”

With the widespread increase in video streaming, “a whole new mechanism of care delivery has emerged that is largely untapped,” Kataria said. With that backdrop, in 2022, the co-founders expect to grow Mytonomy’s annual revenue somewhere between 70% and 100% and its U.S. headcount from 45 to 65 people — and 80 people worldwide, including in India.

Bhargava, a former manager of Google strategic partnerships, founded Mytonomy in 2011 as an ed-tech company with a video platform for high school and college students. Five years later, Kataria came on board as CEO and founded the health care business, which today represents the entirety of the company. She was formerly a Food and Drug Administration senior technology adviser and vice president for product strategy in pharma for Oracle Corp.
