Gener8tor's gBETA Medtech accelerator program, based in Minneapolis, has announced the five companies that are part of its 2022 fall cohort, which focused on supporting Black founders.

The seven-week, no-equity program is led in collaboration with Boston Scientific Corp., St. Paul-based University Enterprise Labs and an initiative of the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA). The accelerator focuses on supporting companies in the medical and health care industries with innovative technology and platforms.

The chosen companies receive access to a network of mentors, investors and partners while getting personalized coaching. Mentors come from the Mayo Clinic, the University of Minnesota and the Medical Alley Association, Madison, Wis.-based Gener8tor says. Launched in 2018, the program is intended to give startups a leg up in gaining access to equity-based accelerators or investment opportunities.

"Gener8tor and gBETA Medtech add tremendous value to the local innovation ecosystem here in Minnesota and across the country, and it's been gratifying to be part of that progress and see its ongoing impact over the years," Bryan Clark, research and development manager at Boston Scientific, said in a statement.

For this fall’s cohort, Gener8tor recruited startups from across the country with the intent to support those with Black founders. According to data by Crunchbase, U.S. startups with at least one Black founder received just 1.2% of overall venture dollars in 2022 through mid-June.

“We’re thrilled to work with Boston Scientific again to continue bolstering the medical technology industry,” Lauren Usher, gener8tor gBETA vice president said in a statement.

Each company received a $10,000 grant as part of the program, according to a gBETA spokesperson.

The fall 2022 cohort kicked off last month and will culminate in a virtual showcase Dec. 15, when the startups will pitch their ideas. To RSVP, click here.

  • EMedicalSentry – a Rockville, Md.-based digital health platform monitoring patients remotely
  • Sanxtuary MD – a Rochester, NY.-based company providing menstrual products and educational resources
  • Tiny Docs – a Chicago-based digital platform providing educational entertainment for kids to learn about health and wellness
