Mobe, a health care company that was spun out of Upsher-Smith Laboratories Inc. eight years ago, announced on Tuesday that it has named Mike Ott to be its CEO.

Ott will move into the role held by Chris Cronin, who has served as CEO for three years. Cronin will move to the newly created position of CEO-employers, where he will focus on the growth of Mobe's employer market business.

Mobe works with health care payers and insurers to reevaluate the needs of their clients through its network of wellness guides, pharmacists and a guidance app. The personalized approach to health care helps remove unnecessary spending, according to Mobe's website.

It spun out of Maple Grove-based pharmaceutical company Upsher-Smith to focus on wellness plans for chronic pain and epilepsy patients. It has since expanded its services to include mental health and other wellness initiatives.

Ott will be tasked with growing the company to its next stages.

He currently is a senior advisor-special government employee for the Department of Defense’s Defense Innovation Unit. Ott also brings prior executive experience as president and chief investment officer for Optum Financial, a unit of Minnetonka-based UnitedHealth Group, and served as president, wealth management– affluent for Minneapolis-based U.S. Bancorp.

Ott earned his undergraduate degree from the United States Air Force Academy, his master’s degree from the Boston College Carroll School of Management and an additional graduate degree from The Wharton School.

“I was drawn to Mobe because I believe in the impact this company can make on people’s lives, and the improvement it can make to our health system. Mobe has already removed over $200 million of unnecessary spend from the healthcare system — and the team has laid an incredible foundation for those who want to get healthier. Now it’s time to accelerate,” said Ott, in a statement.

Mobe also announced the hiring of Kurt Cegielski as its chief commercial officer.
