Safer Plate, an Eden Prairie-based meal kit delivery service with a focus on allergic eaters, launched earlier this month after two years of research and development.
Unlike run-of-the-mill meal kit services, Safer Plate's meals are free of the top food allergens, such as milk, fish and peanuts.
Founder and CEO Angie Nelson was motivated to start the brand after she discovered how difficult it is to find meal options for her son who has a handful of food allergies.
“With so many restrictions in my son’s diet, I quickly became burnt out from the added time I was spending researching safe recipes and reading every label at the grocery store,” Nelson said. “It is incredible to see the growing options in the processed food aisles for those managing food allergies, but there really isn’t a quick meal option out there.”
To elevate the meal offerings, Nelson partnered with Head Chef Gilbert Junge and Julie Jasken, a registered dietician. The team works together to create and test each recipe and ensure it's safe.
Prior to joining Safer Plate, Junge worked as an executive chef for over 15 years, most recently as the corporate chef at Mayo Clinic.
“Our recipes focus on fresh, seasonal ingredients, with little to no refined foods, and complementing these beautiful ingredients with fresh herbs and spices rather than heavy sauces,” Junge said. “So, while we’re creating meals without the top allergens, this approach ensures that the meals taste like they are not 'without' anything.”
The service currently offers 30 options and has plans to expand nationally within the next year. In addition to home meal kits, the company is exploring expansion into schools, supermarkets and airports.
