TeamGenius, a Minneapolis-based company that provides youth sports evaluation software, has raised $1.1 million.
The oversubscribed Seed Round was led by St. Cloud-based Great North Ventures. Other backers include Chicago-based MATH Ventures and Minneapolis-based Groove Capital.
Founded in 2016, the company provides software that allows coaches to manage tryouts and camps through an easy-to-use platform.
TeamGenius said it will use the funding to expand its core evaluation product and fuel growth for its new virtual training platform.
“I’ve been very impressed with TeamGenius and their ability to execute throughout the Covid pandemic,” said Rob Weber, Managing Partner, Great North Ventures. “The youth sports industry they serve was hit very hard and they managed to turn out a strong year despite the challenges. In addition to continuing to scale their evaluation product, the addition of a complementary virtual training platform will accelerate their growth for years to come.”
In September 2020, the company acquired xHockeyDevelopment, an at-home training app built by former NHL star Bryce Salvador.
TeamGenius now plans to spin that program into a broader training platform for youth athletes.
“We’ve always been great at helping players understand what skills they can improve upon, but now we’re building the tools to help them practice and get better at those skills from home," said Chris Knutson, TeamGenius’ co-founder and CEO.
