About two years after he left one of the top jobs at Cary’s SAS Institute to grow California-based SingleStore in Raleigh, Oliver Schabenberger is no longer with the company.

SingleStore confirmed the news Monday, but declined to provide an explanation or details. Schabenberger could not be reached to comment. His profile has been removed from the company’s leadership site.

At one time, Schabenberger, then COO and CTO at SAS, was SAS CEO Jim Goodnight’s heir apparent. When he left in December 2020 for the job at SingleStore, it attracted attention – particularly as Goodnight never publicly named another successor.

Triangle Business Journal has confirmed Schabenberger has not returned to SAS

At SingleStore, Schabenberger opened the company’s East Coast hub in Raleigh’s Warehouse District last year. At the time, he told Triangle Business Journal the plan was to hire quickly and assemble a team of about 50 employees.

SingleStore, formerly known as Mem SQL, had the cash to back up those ambitions. In October of this year, the firm announced it had raised an additional $30 million, bringing its Series F round to $146 million. Overall, the company has raised more than $412 million from entities such as Goldman Sachs (NYSE: GS) and the venture arm of Saudi Aramco.

Earlier this year, Schabenberger took on a role as visiting fellow at Virginia Tech University's academy of data science alongside his job at SingleStore, according to his LinkedIn page. It’s a familiar role, as Schabenberger served as an associate professor of statistics at the school, his alma mater, prior to his tenure at SAS.
