A technology firm focused on collegiate and professional sports has disclosed a $50 million funding round – a raise that includes contributions from big-name athletes.

Durham-based Teamworks disclosed the news in a press release Tuesday. Supporters include David Robinson, the National Basketball League legend who played for the San Antonio Spurs, and former Heisman Trophy quarterback Marcus Mariota, now with the Atlanta Falcons of the National Football League.

Teamworks, founded in 2006 by then-Duke University offensive lineman Zach Maurides, offers a technology platform for sports organizations. The software allows coaches and trainers to manage athletes' schedules with tools such as reminders about training or workout sessions.

Consider a trainer who wants to group student-athletes in small lifting groups. Going through class schedules on paper and matching those schedules is time consuming. Teamworks allows that same trainer to simply ask the software which athletes are free at a certain time.

Maurides was not immediately available to comment, but in a LinkedIn post said “the investment equips us with the ability to continue to build the very best products for our customers, attract the very best talent, and find the very best sports tech entrepreneurs around the world to come build with us.”

The round brings the firm’s total funding haul to more than $100 million, the company said.

The round was led by Delta-v Capital with participation from Seaport Capital, General Catalyst, Teamworthy Ventures, Blossom Street Ventures and Afia Capital. More than 30 current and retired athletes also participated, a group that included Jessica McDonald, a 2019 World Cup Champion with the U.S. women's national soccer team.
