Need caffeine but hate the jittery feeling of coffee? A Winston-Salem startup has secured a patent for its coffee that will give you an energy boost without the jitters.
Rarebird’s coffee isn’t regular coffee and it’s not decaf. That’s because it replaces the caffeine with paraxanthine (Px), the substance created when the human body breaks down caffeine. Compared to caffeine, Px is shown to be less toxic and create less anxiety while creating a stronger wake effect.
Winston-Salem’s Rarebird, founded in 2020, is the first and only company to receive a patent for the formulation of Px coffee.
Consumers who have switched to Px coffee have reported feeling better during the day and sleeping better at night, Rarebird said. Px is also metabolized faster than caffeine, so Rarebird’s coffee can be consumed in the afternoon without keeping someone up at night.
“The securement of our latest patent is a testament to the team’s hard work and dedication – we have been head-down focused on getting this over the finish line and are beyond excited to share this notable milestone with the world,” said Jeffrey Dietrich, co-founder and CEO. “We believe that Px coffee offers all of caffeine’s benefits without any of its drawbacks.”
The patent is on the coffee itself, and Co-founder and Chief Business Officer AD Andracchio told TBJ that Rarebird also has four additional patents pending on different aspects of Px coffee, including manufacturing methods and different form factors.
Rarebird was voted ‘Best New Product’ by the Specialty Coffee Association at the organization’s 2023 expo.
Made from Colombian single-origin coffee, Rarebird is a medium roast ground coffee. A 12-oz. bag retails for $26.50 online with a subscription option for under $20.
The company said it plans to bring its coffee to other retailers and coffee shops in the future.
