A fast-growing Triad startup has changed its top financial leader.
UpStream, a Greensboro value-based care and technology company, has appointed John Way as CFO, effective January 2. He takes over from Brendan Shanahan, who had been with UpStream since March 2022, according to his LinkedIn.
The CFO change comes four months after UpStream appointed a new CEO. Lankford Wade took over in September from Sanjay Doddamani.
Wade had told TBJ that he plans to add another 100 employees within a year. TBJ reported in December 2022 that UpStream employed more than 300.
UpStream helps primary care physicians offer high-quality care to seniors by embedding clinical care teams, comprised of nurses, pharmacists and care concierges, in their practices and through its support platform. The company has raised more than $185 million to date and said in a release yesterday that it manages the care for more than 100,000 seniors.

Way brings over two decades of financial leadership experience in the health care and technology industries.
He has worked for companies like UnitedHealth Group, Virtual Radiologic, Univita Health and Proto Labs as their CFO. UpStream said that he has helped these companies with initiatives that reshaped operational and financial frameworks.
“His expertise in finance and strategy and proven track record across a diverse set of organizations will play a crucial role as we continue to refine and strengthen our health care delivery model, ensuring the best possible outcomes for seniors,” Wade said.
