Clinical ink partners with Mural Health to add patient payment, logistics capabilities to clinical trial software

A health software company founded in Winston-Salem has announced a new partnership that will help it manage payment for clinical trials patients.

Clinical ink has partnered with Pennsylvania-based Mural Health, a next-generation clinical trial participant management company. Clinical ink will use Mural Health’s platform to support participant reimbursement and travel assistance.

“Combining the Mural Health unique patient payment model and transportation assistance with our industry-leading eSource technology further streamlines the experience for patients and sites,” said Chris Crucitti, chief commercial officer for Clinical ink. “We provide sponsors with a single, comprehensive solution to improve compliance.”

Founded and originally headquartered in Winston-Salem, Clinical ink is now based in Horsham, Pennsylvania, a suburb of Philadelphia. Out of 250 worldwide employees, the company employs 60 people in North Carolina, with 30 in the Winston-Salem area. Triad employees work in a variety of areas, such as project management, product support and human resources.

The Philadelphia Business Journal reported that Clinical ink was acquired by GI Partners, a San Francisco investment firm, in August 2020. The clinical trial software company made Deloitte's 2022 Technology Fast 500 list in 2022, coming in at No. 497, having reported a 241% revenue increase between 2018 and 2021.

Clinical ink’s proprietary technology platform, eSource, combines direct data capture, clinical outcomes assessments, patient engagement and consent and digital biomarkers that make participating in clinical trials easier while ensuring protocol compliance.

Using Mural Link – Mural Health’s technology platform – clinical trial participants can now choose how they want to be paid, with options for a paper check, direct deposit into a bank account or online money transfers through PayPal, Venmo and Zelle. Participants will also be able to book travel to and from appointments without incurring out-of-pocket costs.

In addition, Mural Health and Clinical ink will help prevent reliance on prepaid cards, thus eliminating associated fees and the need for clinical trial sites to manage the storage, security and distribution of physical prepaid cards.

The partnership will also reduce administrative burden for clinical trial personnel by integrating clinical systems, drive participant retention and ensure ongoing compliance.

“Together with Clinical ink’s data capture capabilities, our combined solutions will make it easier to engage both patients and caregivers while driving protocol compliance,” said Sam Whitaker, founder and CEO of Mural Health. “We look forward to watching this partnership grow as it continues to benefit all of the components of the clinical research ecosystem.”
