A 3-year-old angel investment group in Winston-Salem has made its largest investment to date.

The Winston-Salem Partners Roundtable (WSPR) Fund announced that it has invested $410,000 into TBJ’s Inno Under 25 honoree CN-Seamless. This is the first time that the WSPR Fund, which focuses on early-stage growth companies in Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, has disclosed the amount of its investment.

Founded in 2021 by three students in North Carolina State University’s engineering program, CN-Seamless has designed a portable CNC machine that can adapt for a variety of uses and can be brought to the metal, rather than the other way around.

Its patent-pending Mach 1 is roughly the size of a carry-on suitcase and less than 35 pounds; it comes with its own Wi-Fi and is controlled through a tablet with its proprietary user interface application. The device uses an oxy-acetylene torch — also known as a gas torch — to cut steel and has customers such as Greensboro’s D.H. Griffin Cos. And Raleigh’s Southern Industrial Constructors.

Co-founder explains CN-Seamless' growth plans

The startup moved to Winston-Salem with one of its co-founders, Josh Cooper, when he took a job post-graduation at Collins Aerospace. The startup has been accepted into the Winston Starts’ accelerator program.

Cooper, who was featured as a TBJ Inno Under 25 honoree in January, went full-time last September. His co-founders, Sam Marcom and Dario Muller, are expected to transition to CN-Seamless full-time soon, TBJ had reported.

“Our goal with CN-Seamless is to solve some of the largest pain points in the construction and manufacturing industries,” said Marcom. “In order to go that, we need to get the product to our customers and this investment will allow us to increase our production capabilities. This is just the first step of our growth plan as we look to also expand our product line in the future.”

Part of the investment terms included CN-Seamless’ commitment to locating its manufacturing facility in Winston-Salem. David Steele – recently retired CEO of JC Steele and Sons and WSPR member – will join the company’s board.

More than half of the WSPR Fund’s 70 accredited investors participated in the CN-Seamless investment.

This investment brings the total amount invested by WSPR to over $3.1 million. Until now, the average size of an investment had been $193,000 and ranged up to $353,000.
