The saying that the best ideas come in the shower is true for Faith Griffin.

While in the shower one day, Griffin, now a senior at High Point University, was struggling to shave her legs because there was no place to safely prop her leg and balance her shaving stuff. That’s when the idea for the Shaving Step came to her.

The Shaving Step is a patent-pending step-stool designed for women to make shaving their legs in the shower safer and easier.

The stool has four retractable and extendable legs for people of different heights, a storage pocket for razors and shaving cream and rubber feet so it doesn’t slide around. For easy storage, the legs of the Shaving Step are collapsible, and the stool has a handle.

“I would say it’s these features that differentiates us because you’re not going to have all those features in an average step stool,” Griffin said. “I want it to be accessible so that people are able to have these cool features and don’t have to pick up something random around their house and use it [when shaving].”

Griffin expects that the Shaving Step will retail for approximately $30. She said she will begin with a B2C model and eventually hopes to have her product sold in stores.

Earlier this summer, Griffin won first place in the 53 Ideas Pitch Day Competition in North Carolina, taking home $10,000. Griffin told TBJ that she intends to use that money to begin manufacturing the Shaving Step.

Griffin also placed second in High Point University’s annual Business Plan Competition last year and has competed in other pitch competitions at High Point and elsewhere.

She declined to disclose how much she has raised outside of the 53 Ideas Pitch Day Competition.

With her two ready prototypes, Griffin has already completed a focus group, where she said she received positive feedback on the Shaving Step.

Griffin said that she has been speaking with different suppliers and manufacturers. She does not have a timeline for launching but hopes to have a few in production within a few months.

Griffin, a Charlotte native, credits HPU and its entrepreneurship program with helping her along her business’ journey.

“I chose High Point specifically because it had an entrepreneurship major,” she said. “Since I’ve been here, I feel like I’ve made the right choice because they have a hands-on approach when it comes to entrepreneurship and even though our school is still pretty small, we have amazing resources.”
