In the four years since its founding, Javara has scaled quickly – and so far, 2022 has been a banner year for the Winston-Salem integrated research organization.
Earlier this spring, Javara raised over $47 million in Series B funding and announced plans to double its employees to almost 400 in the next year or two.
Founded by Jennifer Byrne, Amanda Wright and Linda McCarty, Javara aims to revolutionize the clinical research industry by partnering with health organizations and expanding patient access to clinical trials. Javara integrates research teams and infrastructure into the health organizations, offering centralized resources and standardized operations to advance the clinical research as a care option (CRAACO) movement.
Javara’s unique approach also addresses many of the critical pain points in clinical trials by introducing patients to clinical trials in familiar and convenient settings, helping to reach a more diverse patient population.
Javara currently runs trials within over 50 locations in eight states and expects to expand in existing and new regions throughout the U.S. said Byrne, the company's CEO. Javara currently reaches 5 million patients and 5,800 practitioners.
Its current health care partners include Wake Forest Baptist Health, Tyron Medical Partners in Georgia, Mankato Clinic in Minnesota and Privia Medical Group in North Texas. In Februrary 2021, Javara and WFBH extended its partnership to provide clinical research services across WFBH’s 24-county service area.
The company even assisted a local Covid-19 vaccine trial for Moderna in 2020.
The recent $47 million, from global growth equity firm General Atlantic, represents a significant increase in funding for Javara, which had previously raised $13 million. This funding will go towards expansion with health care partnerships and technology that enables the company to better connect patients to trials and improve efficiencies in processes, Byrne said.
Javara expects to double its headcount by the end of 2023. The company currently employs 180 full-time, of which almost 100 have been hired this year alone.
Byrne said Javara will be hiring all roles, including clinical research professionals and corporate roles. While Javara currently has employees across the U.S., Byrne said it will continue to invest in Triad talent and she plans to keep Javara’s headquarters in Winston-Salem.
Byrne’s vision for the next year: “We will be partnering with 10 health care partners and providing direct access to clinical trial participation for over 10 million patients.”
