The U.S. Air Force, through its innovation arm AFWERX, has awarded Genesis Systems a $1.25 million contract to develop new filtration systems designed to protect potable water supplies from contamination in challenging conditions.

Genesis Systems, a company specializing in renewable water technology, secured the contract to create chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear filtration technologies that will be integrated with their atmospheric water generation and renewable water from air systems.

These systems extract water from ambient air and are used by various branches of the military for water supply needs.

In 2021, the startup moved its headquarters to Tampa, joining other advanced manufacturing operations with a clear message: solving the world’s water scarcity.

“This project is focused on creating filtration systems that will ensure water purity in environments where contamination risks are high,” David Stuckenberg, co-founder, president and COO of Genesis Systems, said in a statement. “The aim is to enhance the safety and reliability of water supplies in diverse and potentially hazardous conditions.”

The Air Force, Army, Navy and Marines have recognized the effectiveness of AWG and RWA systems in generating water in high-efficiency environments. However, according to a statement, the current systems "must be operational" even when exposed to CBRN threats and environmental pollutants such as those from open burn pits.

The statement said the new filtration technology will address these limitations by protecting against contaminants affecting water quality. This advancement is expected to reduce the need for frequent water resupplies and improve overall operational readiness and safety for military personnel.

This spring, the Air Force awarded the startup a phase two $1.2 million contract for its technology that creates water.

The new contract reflects ongoing efforts to enhance military logistics and safety through advanced technology solutions.
