A local organization focused on connecting and building innovation throughout the state has received $75,000 from Florida Power and Light.

The electric services company announced Tuesday it gave the funds to Synapse Florida for its annual Synapse Innovation Awards, which honor entrepreneurs and companies across five categories. The finalists will present at Synapse's eponymous summit on Feb. 14, 2023. The first-place prize is $50,000, followed by $20,000 for second place and $5,000 for third.

“Partnering with FPL helps Synapse Florida amplify awareness of our state’s growing innovation community, highlighting the technology, products and services that are improving our world and changing lives,” Brian Kornfeld, CEO of Synapse Florida, said in a statement. “Synapse is a catalyst for successful relationships, providing unique opportunities for people to make impactful connections and contribute to the thriving global innovation ecosystem.”

This is not FPL's first foray into startups — it launched its innovation hub, 35 Mules, in 2020. FPL officials hope its latest donation will help further empower future local entrepreneurs.

“Supporting these awards is a continuation of how the company and its 35 Mules innovation hub help bring startups’ game-changing ideas to life, growing jobs and innovation here in Florida," said Pamela Rauch, FPL vice president of external affairs and economic development, in a statement. "FPL greatly values the power of partnerships to boost Florida’s startup ecosystem together."

The deadline to apply for the awards is Jan. 13, 2023. Learn more here and see the first slate of winners from its 2021 awards here
