A recent report from Fundera named St. Petersburg among the 15 best cities for female entrepreneurs.

The Sunshine City landed at No. 4. The city is home to a large number of female entrepreneurs with 36.3 percent of self-employed business owners being women. As for wage gap, women make 91 percent of what a male business owner makes — the sixth best rate among the top 15.

Here is what the report had to say about St. Pete:

Another central Florida city makes our list here in St. Pete. This city is affordable due to having no state income tax and low housing costs. Plus, the earnings gap here is less than 10 percent.

One other Florida city made the top 15 with Orlando landing at No. 3. Tampa did not make the top 15.

To create the rankings, Fundera looked at the 100 largest cities in the U.S. by workforce and evaluated them on key metrics which included:

  • Percent of self-employed business owners who are women
  • Percent of women employed in their own business
  • Earnings gap between men and women business owners
  • Housing cost as a percent of earnings for female entrepreneurs
  • Percent of residents with bachelor’s degree, denoting high-skilled workforce
  • Job growth
  • Tax rates

All data is from the 2018 American Community Survey from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Tax Foundation.

Seattle ranked as the best city for female entrepreneurs followed by Paradise, Nevada. It also found cities in California, especially Riverside and Fresno, are among the worst for female entrepreneurs.
