Dozens of Tampa Bay technology companies — ranging from institutional giants to slowly-growing startups — clamored for federal Paycheck Protection Program loans, according to new data from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The SBA released the data about the $659 billion relief program on Monday, including information about loans of $150,000 or more along with recipients' names, addresses, industries, business types and loan amount ranges. The data did not specify if applicants accepted the funds.

Roughly 8,500 businesses in the Tampa Bay region applied for the relief loans that were made available under the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act. Almost 40 of those local businesses applied for $5 million or more. The main intention of the funds is to cover payroll costs.

While the coronavirus pandemic has decimated virtually every industry across the nation, startups are in the unique spot of being able to pivot and meet the ever-changing demand from other industries as issues continue to arise.

According to the data, more than 50 local technology companies applied for PPP funding ranging from $150,000 to $10 million.

AgileThought was the standout, applying for a loan between $5 to $10 million, according to data. Officials for the Tampa-based software consulting firm were unable to confirm if the company received the loan as of Tuesday evening.
