Jabil has teamed up with Magic Leap, an augmented reality South Florida startup worth over $4 billion.
The two tech giants announced their partnership Monday, revealing the duo worked together to launch Magic Leap One in August 2018.
"We’re solving some very difficult problems here at Magic Leap and we know we can’t solve those problems alone," Omar Khan, chief product officer at Magic Leap, said in a statement. "In order to build Magic Leap One, all of the technologies and processes haven't existed; we’re having to invent things along the way. And we couldn't think of a better partner than Jabil to help us solve those problems."

They are now working to use the technology for an enterprise training program, which overlays videos on the device and allows for remote assistance for the trainee.
"When we first started talking to Jabil, we were very impressed with the capabilities they have, which we call the black box," Lonnie Bernardoni, Magic Leap's corporate vice president, supply chain, said in a statement. "We’re able to build prototype units and have only a very limited number of people know what we’re doing. So, that made us feel very comfortable that we could build our product there and protect it."
More than 8,000 prototypes were made for Magic Leap with the help of Jabil, which truly did the heavy lifting when it came time to the supply chain. Because Jabil has been a long-time, large-scale player in the supply chain industry, simply having Jabil officials in meetings helped secure better prices faster on products and supply guarantees, Magic Leap said.
"I think any time a company is bringing a new product, a new technology, into a new space, having a partner that that is a well-known, large scale manufacturer like Jabil is helpful in many ways," Jeff Farrand, Jabil's business unit leader, said in a statement. "The key to the success thus far has been Jabil's ability to be flexible and agile in the development process. We are able to support them on optical design, also test and process the development through precision mechanics and tooling."
Magic Leap is a Plantation-based startup founded in 2011, which goes beyond augmented reality and overlays virtual images with the real world. The company has raised $2.6 billion to date, including from Google and AT&T.
