Saint Leo University will expand its STEM major offerings by adding two new technology-focused majors this coming fall.
The university is adding software engineering and data science for students effective fall 2019, according to a press release.
Software engineering will be offered through the university's Tapia College of Business. Undergraduate and master's degree programs are both available. The degree program is offered at its home, University Campus in east Pasco County, and online.
"There is growing marketplace demand for professionals with a broad and deep expertise in software," the press release states. "The new software engineering degree meets this need through courses in software architecture, design, development, testing. Additionally, students will learn to appreciate the business implications of software development and development challenges."
The data science program will be taught through the school's Department of Mathematics and Science.
"This emerging field is essentially the answer to the questions that come as more businesses, governments, science, individuals and other entities collect information about customers, markets, products and all important activities," a statement reads. "Intelligent decision making for organizations now rests on the ability to extract data, present it in meaningful ways, and protect it."
The school is also adding a medical humanities degree program, theater major and is changing its English major.
