A massive number of Tampa Bay companies were acquired in 2021

This year proved the region has talent, and many suitors thought it was so enticing they had to have a piece. 2021 brought in triple the amount of acquisitions compared to 2020, with 21 companies snatched up compared to seven companies last year.

But the acquisitions don't necessarily mean a loss to the region. Many of the players plan on keeping their headquarters — and employees — local. It continues to show Tampa Bay is creating companies worth noticing.

Tampa Bay Inno rounded up all the Tampa Bay technology companies that were bought this past year below.

January

  • Core Associates, a Tampa software company focused on workplace automation, was acquired by AvidXchange, a Charlotte fintech unicorn. Core Associates was founded in 2008 and has over 30K users. 
  • Clearwater-based CoreRx was acquired by Raleigh-based NovaQuest Private Equity for an undisclosed amount. CoreRx was founded in 2006 and provides contract development and manufacturing services to small and mid-size biotech and pharmaceutical companies. 

February

  • Tampa-based Demio, a webinar platform startup, was acquired by Seattle-based events marketing company Banzai for an undisclosed amount. Demio was founded in 2014. With the acquisition, its platform will now be made available to Banzai customers in a joint offering. 
  • Seminole-based Salvo Technologies acquired St. Pete-based Spectrology LLC for an undisclosed amount. Spectrology produces spectrometers, imaging and sensing products and stated it will look at consolidating operations with Salvo Technologies in the near future. 
  • A Nashville-based company acquired St. Petersburg's Janus Displays for an undisclosed amount. Uniguest, which provides technology solutions to customer-facing businesses, snagged the St. Pete company in a recent string of acquisitions. Janus Displays, you may have guessed, focuses on digital signage and "engagement technology" in the hospitality industry.
  • RoundTable Healthcare Partners, an Illinois private equity firm with a focus on health care, acquired a Tampa dentistry technology company. DDS Lab was acquired for an undisclosed amount, as part of RoundTable's $700M "Equity Fund V." Senior debt financing was provided by Capital One Healthcare.

March

  • Clearwater-based Ensurem was acquired by Miami private investment firm 777 Partners for an undisclosed amount. Ensurem is a fast-growing insurance technology and product distribution company and said it will use the new Miami footing to further expand its tech. 
  • Continental Benefits Inc., a third-party administrator in the health care industry was acquired for an undisclosed amount by fellow Tampa-based Marpai Health. The partnership will allow Marpai Health to launch an AI-enabled health plan system.

April

  • Tampa edtech startup Script was acquired by EMS LINQ Inc., a North Carolina company for an undisclosed amount. We chatted with Script founder and CEO Aaron White to get the full details on what this means for the company, the region and the Tampa Bay startup scene here

May

  • Tampa-based iProcedures, a cloud-based anesthesia documentation company, was acquired by Provation, a Minnesota health care company. Financial details of the deal were not disclosed, but Provation's CEO Daniel Hamburger said the company will add roughly $100M in revenue with the new addition. The Business Journal has more
  • Sarasota-based Perform[cb], formerly known as Clickbooth, was acquired by Canadian private equity firm Beringer Capital. Company officials told Tampa Bay Inno the acquisition is more of a partnership; no changes will be made to its C-level team. It will remain in Sarasota and there were no layoffs.   • Synzi, a St. Pete-based startup focusing on the telehealth industry, was acquired by AMN Healthcare in a $42M cash deal. Synzi's CEO Lee Horner said — for the most part — the deal won't change the day-to-day operations of the company; the name, St. Pete location and employees are all staying the same.   • Tampa-based eMBS Inc., which tracks mortgage-backed securities, was acquired by Black Knight, a Jacksonville-based company software provider for mortgage and home equity lending and servicing. 

June

  • St. Petersburg-based Presence was acquired by Canadian learner engagement platform Modern Campus for an unknown amount. Presence's founder Reuben Pressman has long been in the local startup game, and serves as the city's Entrepreneur-in-Residence. The partnership will allow Presence to be part of a broader network of 1,400 schools and universities. August

  • Tampa-based Mize, a SaaS solution provider for the manufacturing industry, merged with a Swedish cloud solution provider. Mize will now be known under the Syncron name, which acquired Mize for an undisclosed amount. Ashok Kartham, Mize's founder and CEO, will become Syncron's chief product officer.
  • Tampa-based Chase Media Services LLC was acquired by a Virginia-based marketing firm with a focus on the clean economy. Tigercomm did not disclose the amount. Chase Media's president Melissa Baldwin will join Tigercomm as senior VP. 
  • Cipher Integrations was acquired by DSM. Both Lakeland-based companies are in the data and IT service space. Financial details of the deal weren't disclosed, but Cipher's offerings and engineering team will roll into DSM. 
  • SunView Software, a Tampa-based provider of IT service management software, was acquired by California-based Serviceaide Inc. Now, the company says it wants to up its workforce in Tampa by at least 20%, and double the company as a whole within the next year. Get the full story here

September

  • Tampa-based GCD Insurance Consultants was acquired by an Atlanta insurance brokerage firm. OneDigital acquired GCD — which offers HR, payroll administration solutions and employee benefits — for an unknown amount. Roughly 20 GCD employees will transition to OneDigital, with the firm's three principals shifting to similar leadership roles. 

October

  • Tampa-based IT Authorities was acquired by a Virginia-based publicly traded company. WidePoint Corp. (NYSEAMERICAN: WYY) announced in a conference call purchasing consideration for IT Authorities included $8M in cash and $550K in stock warrants. The Business Journal has the details
  • St. Pete-based Neptune Flood, an AI-driven flood insurance company, acquired fellow St. Pete company Jumpstart Insurance Solutions for an undisclosed amount. The acquisition will help Neptune break into the AI-driven earthquake space.
