With training and support, the fellows of the Knight Foundation Fellowship in Healthcare Technology Innovation work in multidisciplinary teams to develop new healthcare products, services and innovations that benefit patients, providers and the community.

“Your network is your net worth. I now have a new network of colleagues whom I am sure I will stay connected with in the future,” said Stefanie Karangelen, physician associate, emergency medicine concierge, Sollis Health Miami Beach.

The Knight Foundation Fellowship offers a unique opportunity for healthcare professionals and the business community to converge and address the unmet needs of interest and importance in healthcare. As the program wrapped up its inaugural year, final project presentations included cross-platform patient information accessibility and EMT-assisted stroke diagnosis.

“The program helped reinforce some things I already knew, but more importantly opened my eyes to the innovation process,” said Don Parris, assistant vice president, center for advanced analytics, Baptist Health South Florida.

Highlights from the program

The program included intimate conversations with luminaries John Abele, founder of Boston Scientific, and regional entrepreneur Maurice R. Ferré, who has launched multiple billion-dollar startups.

Fellows shared their perspective on the guest speakers:

“The program attracts guest speakers who are some of the best and brightest in the industry. Their lessons are invaluable for anyone looking to innovate in healthcare,” said Court McEachrane, senior associate, data science consulting, KPMG

“The best part had to have been the roundtable discussions with leaders in the industry. That was a wonderful benefit of the fellowship,” said Zicky Postigo, senior analyst, healthcare strategy and transformation, Baptist Health.

As part of the program, fellows are grouped into multidisciplinary teams to bring forth a variety of multifaceted perspectives in developing pioneer concepts and aligned analysis to critical medical needs. At the end of the 10-month program, the fellowship culminates with each team delivering its final project “pitch” presentation that encompasses novel ideas and potential commercial solutions. An integral feature of the program is the networking and connections made through the strong channel pipeline created exclusively for fellowship participants.

“The fellowship offers an immersive experience that provides knowledge and hands-on experience for participants. It was an opportunity to meet professionals across many disciplines, build a knowledge base of the many aspects of entrepreneurship and learn how to apply that knowledge. One highlight was when the distinguished guest speakers shared their journeys and experiences. The lectures also took the topics to a level of detail to really understand the concepts and apply them in a pitch,” said Andrew Tilson, high-reliability practices coach, corporate quality and accreditation, Baptist Health.

The fellowship strives to provide elite training on the innovation process, as well as experiential learning for each participant.

“When I started the program, I was uncertain how participants from various areas would function together. However, I soon found that each member brought his or her own individual knowledge — which only enhanced the teams. Learning and working with each team member and having the opportunity to interact with each other provided me with invaluable knowledge and an amazing experience,” said Rosanna Otero-Molina, senior auditor, compliance, Baptist Health.
