Tech salaries in Miami went up in 2022. Here's how the city compares to other U.S. hubs

Tech salaries in Miami increased at a higher percentage than those in Silicon Valley last year.

But it's not the best-paid city in the Sunshine State.

South Florida tech salaries reached an average of $104,542 in 2022, according to the 2023 Dice Tech Salary Report. That's up 10.6% from the year before, more than the 5.1% rise reported in Silicon Valley, a region that includes San Francisco. However, Silicon Valley still offers the best tech compensation in the U.S. at an average of $144,962 a year.

Miami offered the lowest average salary of the 25 U.S. cities analyzed, but ranked sixth when measured by year-over-year percentage increase.

Tampa, meanwhile, is home to the state's best-paid tech jobs. Average salaries hit $120,900 last year, up 19% from 2021. Tampa had the second-highest percentage change in the country, behind only Phoenix, where salaries rose 26.2% to reach $120,731.

Arizona, led by gains in Phoenix, had the highest statewide percentage growth, at 20%, followed by Oregon (12%) and Connecticut (11%). In Florida, salaries only grew 2.7% to reach $103,375.

Nationwide, the average tech salary rose 2.3% to $111,348, compared to $108,857 the year before. The data shows cities outside of traditional tech hubs are experiencing some of the strongest salary growth as more employees move away from traditional hubs in California and New York.

"Following a year of strong salary growth for tech professionals, the continued upward trend in average tech salary shows that tech skills and the professionals that provide them can still command high compensation because of sustained demand," the report said.

Not every tech job is compensated equally. People employed in IT management (C-suite level staff) had the largest salaries last year, earning an average of $164,814.

That "hints at how many companies, their budgets flush with profits from the past few years, amply rewarded their executives," the report said.

Professionals with highly specialized skills also earned the most, including solutions architects ($155,934), principal software engineers ($153,288) and systems architects ($151,364). Employees who master programming models and data-related skills such as MapReduce, Elasticsearch, Apache Kafka and Teradata also received the biggest paychecks.
