McClatchy among investors behind Miami startup's $5.3 million funding round

A Miami startup raised millions of dollars to fund a platform that is revamping the way businesses create and send email newsletters.

Letterhead announced it closed a $5.3 million seed funding round led by Las Olas Venture Capital and Reign Ventures, with participation from McClatchy and the Florida Opportunity Fund.

Founded in 2022, the company automates the creation and management of email newsletters. That helps publishers and marketing teams produce targeted content at scale. Letterhead uses artificial intelligence to manage multiple newsletters in one workflow.

"Our vision is to help every company engage their audiences with meaningful media content," said co-founder and CEO Christopher Sopher. "Our first step is making it possible for any business to create great newsletters in a fraction of the time."

Changes to online cookies and privacy rules, which make it more difficult for advertisers to track online behavior, makes it more critical than ever for companies to own their audiences, he added.

The company reports it works with the publishers of more than 1,800 email newsletters, with clients that include brands like Techstars and Salon.com.

Letterhead will use the seed funding to grow its team and develop its platform, according to a news release. It has an office in Miami's Buena Vista neighborhood and currently has at least 10 employees.

Nate Vasal, partner at Las Olas Venture Capital in Fort Lauderdale, said Letterhead stands out because its email marketing strategy stresses content-driven engagement.

“We were impressed with the team’s vision for an owned audience future powered by AI and automation," Vasal said.
