Kirkland-based cybersecurity company Veeam has acquired Alcion, a cybersecurity company headquartered in Santa Clara, California.

The companies aren't disclosing financial terms of the deal.

Veeam, which announced the acquisition Wednesday, has about 5,500 employees. It's unclear how many employees Alcion has, but a spokesperson said Veeam has offered jobs to all of Alcion's full-time employees.

Alcion co-founder and CEO Niraj Tolia is taking the chief technology officer role at Veeam. The company's previous CTO, Danny Allan, left in January to join Snyk as CTO after seven years at Veeam.

"Niraj is one of those rare individuals who not only understands where the market is headed but also possesses the skills and vision to bring that future to life," Veeam CEO Anand Eswaran said in a release.

The Veeam spokesperson didn't say what will happen to the Alcion brand, but in an email said the company "strongly encourages customers to move to the Veeam data cloud." Alcion's website now says "Alcion backed by Veeam."

Alcion, founded in 2022, offers data protection and backups for Microsoft 365 products. According to the company, it protects against ransomware, malware and outages.

Veeam and Tolia had already crossed paths before Wednesday's acquisition. Tolia previously co-founded the data management company Kasten, which Veeam acquired in 2020. He stayed at Veeam for more than a year before launching Alcion, according to his LinkedIn page.

Veeam was founded in 2006. The company focuses on data protection, data backups and data recovery. Private equity firm Insight Partners acquired Veeam in 2020 for $5 billion. Veeam said it has more than 550,000 customers, including Shell, Airbus and Deloitte.

Veeam opened its Kirkland office in Carillon Point in September of last year, and the company has called the office its headquarters since the first quarter. Veeam previously considered Columbus, Ohio, as its headquarters. The company had about 80 employees based in Kirkland as of June.

In April, Veeam acquired Coveware, a ransomware recovery company, for an undisclosed amount. Coveware helps clients identify ransomware attacks, conduct secure negotiations and handle settlements.
