Bellevue-based wellness company Viome Life Sciences has acquired Naring Health, a wellness company headquartered in Palo Alto, California.

Viome, which announced the acquisition Thursday, is likely keeping "less than a handful" of Naring Health's roughly 20 employees, Viome founder and CEO Naveen Jain said. The acquisition comes after Viome closed its $86.5 million Series C round in August, which brought the company's total amount raised to $175 million.

Jain said Viome has about 125 employees with the acquisition, and the Naring Health brand will fold into Viome. The company isn't disclosing financial terms of the deal.

Viome is gaining two brands through Naring Health: DiscernDX and Foodome. DiscernDX's platform measures changes in the body, with the aim of detecting issues early and helping with decision-making. Foodome, meanwhile, identifies all the different components in a given food to better understand the impacts.

"The more knowledge we have about every food and what it impacts, we can make our recommendations even more precise," Jain said.

Viome was founded in 2016. The company makes at-home gut and full-body health tests. Viome says these tests can help identify root causes for issues with heart health, mood, digestive health and the immune system, among others. Viome sends tailored supplements, such as pills and powders, meant to boost customers' health, and the company sells at-home oral health tests and lozenges.

Viome also sells to medical professionals in addition to its direct-to-consumer model. Before its Series C round, Viome raised $54 million in November 2021. In addition to its Bellevue headquarters, Viome has lab space in Bothell.

As for why Naring Health was an appealing acquisition target, Jain highlighted the granular breakdown of a food's makeup Viome can now access.

"This database of knowledge has never been available," Jain said. "Most people will think of a food as three or four things inside that food, rather than looking at 250 or 500 bioactive compounds."
