Seattle-based tax software company Avalara is subleasing four floors at its Pioneer Square headquarters.

An Avalara spokesperson Thursday confirmed the company has been marketing four floors in Hawk Tower at 255 South King Street since late last year. The spokesperson didn't specify how many floors Avalara still has in the building, saying it occupies "multiple floors" there but "lease terms are not disclosed."

"Like every big tech company, we’re continuously evaluating our physical office space, including how much to sublease, and what our employees will need in the future for collaborative in-office experiences," the spokesperson said in a statement to the Business Journal.

The office space appeared on the market through the web page of CBRE, a commercial real estate firm.

Avalara is downsizing its physical footprint after numerous former employees took to LinkedIn in January to say they had been laid off. According to Business Journal research, Avalara employed 895 people in Washington in 2022. The company now employs about 700 people in the state. The company has more than 4,300 employees listed on LinkedIn.

Avalara, founded in 2004, went public in 2018. Its technology helps with sales and use tax, consumer use tax and international compliance. Avalara's clients include Netflix, Zillow and Converse.

In October, Austin-based private equity firm Vista Equity Partners acquired Avalara for $8.4 billion, taking the company off the New York Stock Exchange. The deal had faced opposition from some individual shareholders and shareholder firms when it was first announced in August. Avalara shareholders, however, approved the deal in October just days before it was finalized.

"We thank our employees, customers, partners and shareholders for their trust during this process, and we are excited to begin our work alongside Vista,” Scott McFarlane, co-founder and CEO of Avalara, said in a release after the deal closed.
