Biotech giant Moderna Inc. (Nasdaq: MRNA) is opening an office in South Lake Union as part of a West Coast expansion.

The Cambridge, Massachusetts-based company plans to hire up to 220 employees in Seattle, a company spokesperson confirmed. Moderna didn't specify how large the space would be, but the spokesperson said it will open April 4.

“Moderna is investing to fully realize our ambition of embedding technology into everything we do,” Brad Miller, Moderna's chief information officer, said in a release. “We are hiring rapidly in-market across key tech capabilities and are excited to grow our presence in Seattle, an area rich in highly skilled talent.”

Moderna said the Seattle office will focus on tech solutions like artificial intelligence and cloud-based tools. Moderna is hiring a variety of roles in Seattle, including product managers and engineers. The company currently has about 40 open roles listed in Seattle on its website. In addition to Seattle, Moderna is opening an office in South San Francisco, and the company plans to hire about 2,000 new employees around the world by the end of the year.

Moderna, founded in 2010, is developing dozens of vaccines and other therapies. The company has been in the spotlight in recent years for developing a Covid-19 vaccine. Moderna is focused on mRNA vaccines, which allow the immune system to create antibodies. In addition to Cambridge, Seattle and South San Francisco, Moderna has locations in Norwood, Massachusetts; Bethesda, Maryland; Princeton, New Jersey; and Atlanta.

In Moderna's fourth quarter and full-year 2022 financial results, released in February, the company said it generated $5.1 billion in revenue during the quarter, down from $7.2 billion during the fourth quarter of 2021. Moderna attributed the decline to fewer sales of Covid vaccines. The company generated $19.3 billion in revenue during the year, up from $18.5 billion in 2021.
