Seattle-based internet-of-things company Impinj Inc. (Nasdaq: PI) is promoting Hussein Mecklai to chief operating officer.

Mecklai has been with Impinj since 2018 as the company's executive vice president of engineering. He is the first COO since Eric Brodersen stepped down in March 2020.

“Hussein has helped Impinj set a new bar in product performance, integration and ease of use,” Chris Diorio, Impinj founder and CEO, said in a news release. “With his strong technology and business leadership and acumen, he is ideally positioned to help us grow our organization, scale our operations and continue to deliver world-class products as we work to achieve our vision."

Two years ago when the company announced Brodersen was stepping down, the company said it didn't plan to replace him. A spokesperson said at the time the leadership team could absorb the role.

Prior to joining Impinj, Mecklai spent about six years at Intel. According to Impinj, Mecklai was the vice president and general manager of the product architecture group at Intel. Before Intel, Mecklai spent more than five years at the German semiconductor company Infineon Technologies. According to his LinkedIn page, his most recent role at the company was vice president of engineering.

Impinj was founded in 2000. The company's technology connects everyday goods like apparel and automobile parts to the internet through computer chips and software. Its services are aimed at industries like retail and airlines. Impinj's customers include Cisco, Coca-Cola and Volvo.

Impinj reported revenue of $45.2 million during its third quarter 2021 earnings results, which were released in October.

“Retail and supply chain and logistics are undergoing digital transformations to keep pace with demand, grow revenue and profitability and improve customer experiences. Impinj’s products and platform are key enablers for our partners and enterprise customers to realize this transformation," Mecklai said in a news release. “I am so proud of what the Impinj team and our partners have accomplished."
