A startup that helps couples create prenuptial agreements made a deal with "Shark Tank" investors Kevin O’Leary and Nirav Tolia to expand the business.
HelloPrenup was co-founded earlier this year by CEO Julia Rodgers, a Massachusetts divorce attorney, and Sarabeth Jaffe, chief technology officer, a software engineer based in Seattle.
The founders appeared on ABC's Shark Tank on Nov. 12, walking away with $150,000 for a shared 30% equity (15% each for O'Leary and Tolia) in their business.
Rodgers said she saw firsthand couples’ hesitation to invest their time and money in the traditional process of creating prenuptial agreements. Jaffe saw the business from an alternative perspective as she looked into hiring a lawyer for a prenup shortly after getting engaged.
They launched HelloPrenup in June 2021 after operating for a year in beta. Users are now able to create legally binding agreements in 18 states, including California, Massachusetts, New York and Florida, among others.
In addition to prenup creation services, the site offers free information about prenups via videos and articles.
"We founded HelloPrenup after seeing how engaged couples wanted to work together, collaboratively, through the prenup process instead of hiring separate attorneys to draft their agreement, only to spend thousands of dollars on negotiations,” Rodgers said. “We are excited to be able to give couples the chance to collaborate, at a cost they can afford."
O'Leary, a regular on the investment show, leads the O'Leary Financial Group. Tolia, a guest "Shark" on the Nov. 12 episode, was most recently CEO and co-founder of Nextdoor.
