Avalara, a Seattle-based tax compliance software company, announced Wednesday it has added Marcela Martin to its board of directors.

Martin is the chief financial officer at Squarespace, a platform that allows users to build websites. She has been with Squarespace since November after serving almost two years as the chief financial officer at Booking.com. Before Booking.com, Martin was executive vice president and chief financial officer at National Geographic.

“Marcela is an accomplished CFO with experience leading global companies and driving business transformation,” Scott McFarlane, CEO and co-founder of Avalara, said in a statement. “Her expertise in streamlining operations and M&A integration combined with her experience guiding strategic operations during periods of growth will add tremendous value to Avalara’s board of directors.”

According to Avalara, Martin leads Squarespace's finance and corporate development functions.

Avalara, founded in 2004, provides software to help with sales and use tax, consumer use tax and international tax. The company went public on the New York Stock Exchange in 2018. Its clients include Zillow, Adidas and Pinterest. Avalara Chief Operating Officer Amit Mathradas in July told the Business Journal the company had more than 700 employees in the Seattle area.

Martin joins two new board members, Bruce Crawford and Srinivas Tallapragada, Avalara announced in June. Crawford was the former chief information officer for the Army, while Tallapragada is the president and chief engineering officer at Salesforce.

Avalara has acquired multiple companies recently, including Inposia, Transaction Tax Resources and Impendulo Limited. Martin's brings experience in mergers and acquisitions from her time at Booking.com.

"With an ambitious goal of becoming part of every transaction in the world, (Avalara) has invested heavily in M&A and operations to serve businesses across numerous tax types. I look forward to joining Avalara’s board and helping shape the company’s future growth,” Martin said in a statement.
