Google Analytics, which provides site analysis for roughly half of the world's websites, might be the biggest player in the world of web analytics. But that's not stopping the San Francisco startup Umami Software Inc. from trying to compete.
Umami Software, which just pulled a pre-seed round of $1.5 million, is trying to make its small size an asset, not an obstacle. “We want users to have access to quality analytics without the need to rely on and entrust their data with giant tech companies like Google," Mike Cao, co-founder and CEO of Umami, said in a news release. "Our customers are those who want to measure the success of their product or website while respecting the privacy of their users."
Founded earlier this year by brothers Brian, Francis and Mike Cao, the startup is being backed by Race Capital, a relatively young venture firm based in Palo Alto that focuses on data infrastructure startups.
"Using privacy-violating products such as Google Analytics will be a liability for enterprises and Umami is the only alternative to make sure all organizations are GDPR-compliant," Alfred Chuang, a partner at Race Capital, said in the news release. "GDPR" refers to the European Union's General Data Protection Regulation, which regulates the privacy and protection of personal data.
Umami will use the funding to hire more marketers and developers, according to the release.
