Andrej Karpathy, an AI researcher that was on the founding team of OpenAI, is leaving the organization, according to a post announcing his departure that he made on X.

Karpathy was an on-again-off-again employee at San Francisco-based OpenAI, having left and rejoined the company last year after a five-year stint at Tesla overseeing its semi-self driving autopilot software.

Before his departure, he was working on a more business-focused AI assistant product for OpenAI, the Information reported.

On X Karpathy said he has no "issue or drama" with OpenAI and is leaving to work on personal projects.

"Andrej is departing to pursue personal projects," OpenAI said in a statement. "We are deeply grateful for his contributions and wish him the best. His responsibilities have transitioned to a senior researcher who worked closely alongside Andrej."

OpenAI did see some dramatic departures last year when it fired then rehired its CEO Sam Altman, who came back only after the company agreed to let go of three board members, one of whom still works at the company.
