Apple Inc. on Wednesday announced its third cohort of companies accepted into the tech giant’s Impact Accelerator. Making the ranks are two Bay Area company from San Jose and Union City.

The accelerator is a three-month program focused on providing underrepresented business owners training to build services around environmental sustainability. According to Cupertino-based Apple, the program specifically focuses on selecting Latinx-, Black- and Indigenous-owned businesses.

The tech titan (NASDAQ: APPL) announced it selected 12 companies from across the country working in industries such as chemical engineering, recycling, decarbonization, among others.

"From renewable energy to recycling and more, these diverse leaders are serving their communities, expanding opportunity, and pioneering new solutions in the fight against climate change. We’re proud to support their journeys — and we can’t wait to see what they’ll come up with next," Lisa Jackson, Apple’s vice president of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives, said in a statement.

The accelerator was initially launched in 2021 with three Bay Area businesses represented in its inaugural class. In 2022, the program had selected four Bay Area companies.

According to Apple, the catalyst that helped inspire the program was a commitment the company announced in 2020 to reach carbon neutrality come 2030. The goal, which Apple said will be applied across the whole business including manufacturing supply chain, has already been met in its "global corporate operations."

Companies that participate in the program are considered for potential opportunities to become future contractors in Apple's network.
