Nuro Inc. is adding a new autonomous delivery vehicle to its fleet.
Dubbed "Nuro," the new vehicle features twice the cargo space as the Mountain View company's older vehicle, the R2, and can carry almost 500 pounds. Nuro also has temperature-controlled compartments to keep items warm or cool and an external airbag to protect pedestrians and cyclists in case of collisions.
"We are excited about the opportunity to fulfill our vision of improving everyday life through autonomous delivery at scale," Dave Ferguson, Nuro's co-founder and president, said in a press release.
Additionally, the company intends to begin charging its vehicles with 100% renewable energy starting this month, it said. It will use wind farm-produced electricity to power its vehicles and facilities, it said in a new sustainability report.
Nuro plans to build its vehicles at a factory in southern Nevada. It recently broke ground on the facility, Ferguson said in the press release.
Last month, the company announced a partnership with 7-Eleven Inc. to have its vehicles deliver goods from one of 7-Eleven's stores in Mountain View. Nuro has also partnered with The Kroger Co., Walmart Inc. and Domino's Pizza Inc. to deliver goods to customers in other states.
