Alternative protein startup The Every Co. is hitting the consumer market for the first time with an animal-free protein debuting in a new smoothie from Santa Monica juice brand Pressed in some coastal markets.
The South San Francisco startup, previously known as Clara Foods, introduced its second alt-protein product in the B2B space last month. The ClearEgg protein, derived via the fermentation process of microorganisms, will be available to consumers starting Nov. 12 as part of Pressed's Pineapple Greens Protein smoothie in the brand's Los Angeles and New York stores, DTC channels and via virtual grocery delivery platforms.
Every Co. touts ClearEgg as the "world's first animal-free egg protein" and a "nearly invisible" powder additive with no aftertaste, gritty texture or need for masking agents in products. It can be mixed into hot, cold or carbonated beverages, acidic juices, energy drinks or snacks such as nutrition bars. While the protein additive is compatible with vegan, kosher and halal diets, Every notes it should be avoided by people with egg allergies due to the similarity of the precision-fermented product to the real thing.
The new Pressed smoothie contains 10 grams of the animal-free protein and 40% of recommended daily vitamin C intake. It's one of several products Every has planned for its egg-protein portfolio, and Pressed plans to include the smoothie in its lineup in more retail locations in 2022.
Every CEO Arturo Elizondo, featured on our 2021 40 Under 40 list, founded the company as Clara Foods in 2014. It launched its first product, an animal-free pepsin that can be used as an ingredient in chewing gum, cheeses, gelatins and other products, in March 2021.
To date the company has raised $56.8 million and is developing a rare fermentation production apparatus at scale through a partnership with ZX Ventures, the innovation arm of AB InBev, which owns Anheuser-Busch.
